Art Classes for Children

Art allows children to express themselves in ways no other subject in school can. It gives theme a voice where they may not otherwise have one. It’s a shame that schools are cutting important subjects like art and music. Kids need a chance to explore their creativity and to give a voice to their imagination. Small group classes, one-on-one lessons and parent participation classes introduce children to a variety of art media for play and self expression.

Tot Art

This parent participation class is specially designed to allow toddlers (age 2-3 not yet enrolled in preschool) to explore various art media. A simple project is offered each week and the children are allowed to roam freely between various stations as their attention span dictates. Easel painting, play dough, crayons and markers and cut and fold projects help develop fine motor skills as kids interact with others in the early stages of socialization. Think of this class as a pre-preschool, art only play time with a parent.

Children will have the opportunity to spend as much or as little time as they like at each station. This is a parent participation, child-led class and the focus is on allowing children to learn through exploration. It’s about enjoying the process of creating art, not about the “finished product”.

Tot Art is by appointment only and is geared for small groups such as play groups. Please call for more information. 916-802-5830.

Primary Colors

StevenThis is a class geared for the busy hands of 3 to 5 year old preschoolers. In the Primary Colors classes, your little artist will explore lots and lots of different art media including tempera and watercolor paint, simple sculpture, glitter, glue, crayons and pastels, collage and play dough as they create a variety of process-oriented masterpieces.

Children will have the opportunity to spend as much or as little time at each of the two project stations each week. This is a parent participation, child-led class and the focus is on allowing children to learn through exploration. It’s about enjoying the process of creating art, not about the “finished product”. Your child will bring home age appropriate works of art and you will learn how to appreciate and talk about art in a supportive and encouraging way. Parents must be on-site for this class. Kinder Art

Kindergarten as last — (and for those almost ready for kindergarten….. Social skills are rapidly developing. Friendships and true interactive play are becoming a priority. Fine motor skills and hand eye coordination are improving with writing practice at school. Children are doing well without mom or dad’s constant presence. Your child is capable of more intricate and controlled manipulation of art products.

Kinder Art allows for the very mature 4 year olds and 5-6 year olds to express themselves in the many age appropriate skill building activities. Now your child is able to follow simple instructions more easily and can begin to learn more about the ways to manipulate art tools to create what is in his imagination. In the Kinder Art classes, your Picasso will create masterpieces using clay, tempera and watercolor paint, sculpture, paper-mache, glitter, glue, crayons and pastels and collage.

Children will be introduced to one or two more detailed projects each week. Although parents must be on site, most children are working while mom or dad is (possibly) relaxing. Your child will bring home age appropriate works of art and you will learn how to appreciate and talk about art in a supportive and encouraging way. You may join this class mid-session.

Home Schoolers

If you are in a home school group, or you can put together at lease 5 children to take this class, you won’t be disappointed. Two classes are available, one for 1st-3rd grade and the other for 4th-6th grade students. Not only will your child learn about various art media and how to use them to create satisfying works of art, they will also learn about art history through famous works of art. Each class uses a fine art piece to illustrate one of the essentials of art (line, shape, color, form, texture and space).  We use the “Artistic Pursuits” home school curriculum because it is an invaluable tool and is very comprehensive. It trains children to observe the world around them and learn to “see” as an artist rather than to copy the instructor’s marks to create an illustration.

A wide variety of art media is introduced as well as the works of famous artists. These classes can meet afternoons by appointment or are available for home schooled children during the daytime.

Home School classes are by appointment only and geared for small groups to allow for individual attention. Please call for more information. 916-802-5830.

Art Workshops

iphone 2011-12-12 006Various times a year I offer Art Workshops that are scheduled before major holidays. This gives children a chance to create gifts or decorations in holiday themes — Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Days, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah. We also offer workshops for private parties that can be scheduled by appointment. Workshops are for ages 10 and up.

Art Parties

If you’re a parent of a Sacramento kid, you’ve probably been to more than your share of birthday parties at bounce warehouses, trampoline warehouses, bowing allies or laser tag venues (and let’s not even talk about the scary rat serving up pizza and video games). You might have even hired a petting zoo or clown to come to your house. BUT, have you ever had an art party?

Sacramento Art Classes now offers Art Parties for teens or kids. Decorate as you wish and serve cake, pizza, snacks — whatever you like.  You’ll save money on goody bags because the project itself is the goody bag. Make a mask, paint a painting, create simple jewelry, make ornaments, etc. Custom art projects can be arranged. Parties are by appointment.
